Jude Bellingham’s Shoulder Concerns at Real Madrid Resurface
Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham, aged 21, experienced a moment of anxiety during a match on September 21 when he collapsed on the field, clutching his shoulder. Despite assurances from Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, the incident revived concerns about a pre-existing shoulder issue from Bellingham’s debut season at the club.
In a press conference following Real Madrid’s 4-1 victory, Ancelotti downplayed the fears, stating, “He was better and has been without [the shoulder protection] for a month. The problem was solved today because he didn’t ask for a change.” This statement was meant to reassure fans and stakeholders alike regarding Bellingham’s fitness.
Sources within Madrid, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed there were no immediate concerns affecting Bellingham’s availability. Nonetheless, discussions have been reignited about how to best manage the English international’s shoulder condition.
Bellingham’s shoulder problems trace back to November of the previous year when he dislocated it during a 0-0 draw. The injury caused him to miss two subsequent matches. Prior to joining Real Madrid, similar issues were noted during his spell at Borussia Dortmund between 2020 and 2023.
Initially, Bellingham used an advanced orthosis, arranged by Dr. Manuel Leyes from the Olympia Quironsalud clinic in Madrid, to stabilize his shoulder. According to Real Madrid staff, Bellingham requested to stop wearing the protective device at the start of the 2024-25 season, citing breathing difficulties and restricted mobility. However, following the Espanyol game, he resumed using the shoulder protection.
There is a consensus among medical experts that surgery may be necessary to prevent future dislocations. Dr. Santiago Arauz from Clinica Cemtro stated, “The risk of recurrence is very high, up to 90 per cent.”
Despite the risks, Real Madrid staff are cautious not to disrupt the player’s momentum by opting for surgery during the competitive season. Coaching staff estimate a recovery period of approximately two months should an operation take place, while other medical estimates suggest 12 weeks.
The club continues to monitor Bellingham’s condition, opting to delay the surgery until a less disruptive time. Sources suggest this conservative approach is reflective of how the club manages similar ongoing injuries, like those experienced by another player struggling with recurrent stress on his left foot.
