In an unforgettable moment for Saint Lucia, Julien Alfred celebrated her incredible victory in the women’s 100m at the Olympics, making history as the island’s first-ever Olympic medalist. The 23-year-old sprinter dominated the race, clocking in at a stunning 10.72 seconds.

Fans back home were in pure ecstasy as they watched Alfred take the gold medal, upstaging the highly favored American champion, Sha'Carri Richardson, who finished with a time of 10.87 seconds. The tiny Caribbean island erupted in cheers, and fans couldn’t contain their excitement, jumping up and down in celebration.

One ecstatic fan, Milton Branford Jr, expressed his pride, saying, “This is a singular moment in history for Saint Lucia that we will remember for the rest of our lives.” He went on to highlight how proud he is of Alfred, calling her one of the most amazing Saint Lucian women he’s ever come across.

Alfred’s victory is particularly significant because she grew up in the modest suburb of Ciceron, showing young people that it’s possible to achieve greatness despite humble beginnings. Supporter Samantha Agard mentioned that Alfred’s triumph serves as inspiration, saying, “If Juju can do it, then I can do it.”

Reflecting on her past, Alfred shared how she used to practice running barefoot in her school uniform. She hopes that her gold medal will lead to better access to sports facilities in Saint Lucia, where she noted that the current conditions are far from ideal.

Cuthbert Modeste, who was Alfred’s first coach since she was nine years old, couldn’t contain his excitement. He believed Alfred would win gold after seeing her run effortlessly in the heats. Modeste confidently told his family, “Yes, the gold is ours.”

Alfred’s journey has not been easy. At the age of 12, she faced a tough moment when her father passed away, which caused her to step back from athletics temporarily. However, with Modeste’s support, she returned to the track and eventually moved to Jamaica, the home of her idol, Usain Bolt, where she developed into a top-tier sprinter.

This Olympic win is not only a milestone for Alfred but also a proud moment for the entire nation of Saint Lucia, celebrating a victory that will resonate for years to come.
