Jürgen Klopp Takes New Role with Red Bull as Global Soccer Head
Jürgen Klopp, the former manager of Liverpool Football Club, is set to return to the realm of football as he assumes a new role as the head of global soccer at Red Bull, starting January 1, 2025. This move comes after Klopp stepped down from his position at Liverpool in 2024, citing exhaustion from nearly a decade of intensive management.
In this new position, Klopp will oversee Red Bull’s extensive network of clubs. Although he will not be involved in the day-to-day operations, his role will encompass strategic visioning, advising sporting directors, bolstering global scouting operations, and aiding in the training and development of coaches. Red Bull’s portfolio includes teams in various regions such as Germany, Austria, the United States, and a new acquisition in Japan.
The decision by Klopp to join Red Bull has generated mixed reactions, particularly among traditional football fans who view the company’s ownership model and branding strategies negatively. Red Bull’s acquisition and rebranding of clubs have often been criticized for being against the wishes of traditionalist supporters. However, Oliver Mintzlaff, CEO of corporate projects and investments at Red Bull, praised the appointment as “the strongest signing in Red Bull’s soccer history” and highlighted Klopp’s “extraordinary skills and charisma.”
Klopp, a revered figure in world football, has expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to work with Red Bull. “After almost 25 years on the sideline, I could not be more excited to get involved in a project like this,” Klopp told reporters. “The role may have changed, but my passion for football and for the people who make the game what it is has not.”
During his tenure, Klopp achieved significant success, winning the Bundesliga twice with Borussia Dortmund and securing numerous titles with Liverpool, including the long-awaited Premier League triumph in 2020. His wealth of experience is expected to bring substantial benefits to Red Bull, as the company seeks to enhance its influence in international soccer.
Amidst the excitement of his new role, Klopp acknowledged that his contract contains a clause allowing for departure should the position of Germany’s national team manager become available post-2026 World Cup. His affiliation with Red Bull sees him stepping into a role previously held by football strategist Ralf Rangnick, with a formal unveiling expected in mid-January.
