Justin Engel Tennis Debut Stuttgart

STUTTGART, GermanyJustin Engel made quite the impression in his first match on grass, winning with determination and skill. Equipped with a wildcard, Engel collapsed onto the lush green court after converting the match point, as the fans on Centre Court erupted in applause, celebrating the young German’s bold performance.

Engel initially needed time to adjust in his grass court debut. However, as the match progressed, the teenager gained confidence. He faced a setback, trailing 2-3 in the decisive set after losing a break and had to be treated by the tournament physician for dizziness. Despite the challenge, Engel found the energy to stage a comeback, sealing the match after two hours and 30 minutes against world number 94.

Just a week ago, Engel competed on clay at the Neckarcup ATP Challenger Tour Event in Bad Rappenau, where he was eliminated in the first round by Argentinian Facundo Mena. The transition to grass was even more impressive given that he prepared to play on carpet surfaces following that defeat.

Engel received support not only from the enthusiastic crowd but also from prominent figures in the stands. Coach Philipp Kohlschreiber was there, along with former Davis Cup player Carl-Uwe Steeb. Engel looks up to Rafael Nadal, who triumphed on grass in Stuttgart back in 2015. The strength and humility Nadal exhibits both on and off the court inspire Engel.

“This is my first grass tournament, and I’m so proud that I managed to play so solidly,” Engel said after the match. “Without the fans, it wouldn’t have been possible. I’m really grateful for their support and can’t wait to play the next round in front of such a crowd.”

Engel will face American Alex Michelsen in the second round on Thursday, who recently defeated French veteran Gael Monfils in three sets. Another exciting match awaits Engel and the fans in Stuttgart.
