Justin Fields New York Jets Training Camp

East Rutherford, New Jersey — Justin Fields, the new quarterback for the New York Jets, is experiencing both highs and lows during team practices. The former Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers player has had a mixed performance in organized team activities (OTAs) this week.

In initial 7-on-7 skeleton drills, Fields demonstrated his skills, earning positive remarks from SNY beat writer Connor Hughes. “He looked solid in the seven-on-seven portion of practice,” Hughes tweeted. Fields showcased impressive throws with noticeable zip, connecting with teammates Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard on plays through tight coverage.

However, as the practice transitioned to full 11-on-11 drills, Fields faced challenges. He was sacked six times during ten dropbacks, completing only three other passes, which included short dump-offs to tight end Jeremy Ruckert and one to Wilson. Hughes described one miss as “a little alarming,” noting that it was a missed opportunity for a potentially easy completion.

The offensive line struggled with protection during the drills, which added pressure on Fields. Despite the addition of first-round draft pick Armand Membou to right tackle, the rest of the offensive line remains the same, leaving questions about its effectiveness.

Weather conditions also played a role, with Hughes highlighting that the Jets will not always have favorable conditions come game time. Fields signed a two-year, $40 million contract with the Jets after an earlier season in Pittsburgh, where he showed some promise but faced challenges.

Fields had a strong record of 4-2 in six games while with the Steelers, throwing 10 touchdowns and only one interception. However, with the Jets, he faces a fresh start, under head coach Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, while adapting to a new offensive scheme.

The upcoming season will be crucial for Fields, given the scrutiny he is under. The Jets are eager to improve their franchise’s success after years of struggles, and Fields’ performance will be closely monitored, especially as they prepare to face the Steelers in Week 1.

As the league anticipates his development, Jets fans are hopeful that Fields can leverage his talent to lead the team to greater heights.
