Juventus Signs Lloyd Kelly Amidst Injuries, Sparks Controversy

Torino, Italy – Lloyd Kelly made the transition from Newcastle United to Juventus in a surprising winter transfer, just months after joining the Premier League side.
Kelly’s initial foray into 2025 saw him play against Bromley in the FA Cup on January 12, where he started in a heavily rotated squad. Now, he faces a new challenge with Juventus, having made his debut for the Italian giants during a Champions League play-off against PSV on February 11.
The 26-year-old defender’s journey has taken a sudden turn. Initially signed by Newcastle as a free agent last summer, he faced stiff competition for a starting position, further complicated by his relegation to fourth-choice center-back. His unexpected move to Juventus became especially relevant after their primary defenders, Gleison Bremer and Juan Cabal, sustained serious knee injuries.
Despite previous struggles, Juventus emphasized their need for reinforcements and agreed to a deal that included an obligation to buy for up to £20 million ($24.9 million). Kelly’s versatility as both a left-back and center-half likely appealed to the club, yet his mixed performances have raised eyebrows among fans and analysts alike.
“Lloyd is an integral part of what we’re doing, from my perspective,” said Newcastle manager Eddie Howe before the transfer. “We’ve certainly not had any bid anywhere close to making the club make a decision.” However, once Juventus proposed a lucrative offer, Newcastle found it difficult to refuse.
Newcastle entered the January transfer window aiming to bolster their Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) position, which complicated their decision regarding Kelly. The defender had only started seven games for the Magpies, including a poor performance against West Ham in November.
As Howe’s team faced numerous injuries and with Kelly available, many were surprised by his lack of playing time. The decision to allow the player to leave raised questions about the depth of the squad. Both Sven Botman and Dan Burn faced injury scares, amplifying worries about squad depth.
Kelly expressed his eagerness for the new opportunity at Juventus, stating, “I’m excited. It’s quite a transition, so I’m going to have to adapt quickly, but I’m looking forward to the challenge.” His move comes amid a growing trend of British players joining Serie A clubs, including Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori.
Despite the complexities of the situation, Howe acknowledged the business logic behind the transfer while expressing reluctance to part with Kelly: “It was not necessarily my decision to let him leave,” he noted. During his tenure, Kelly had been viewed as a versatile and capable player, yet he made only 16 starts in a season and a half. His lack of consistent play, compounded by injuries and strategic choices made by the coaching staff, ultimately led to his departure.
The financial implications of Kelly’s transfer and the use of the funds toward new recruits is now a priority for the club. Paul Mitchell, Newcastle’s sporting director, faces the challenge of rebuilding the squad and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. For Juventus, the challenge remains whether Kelly can adapt and provide the depth required in defense.
The coming months will reveal if this decision proves beneficial for both clubs involved in this unconventional transfer saga.
