Kaja Juvan Advances, Veronika Erjavec Faces Tough Opponent
LIUBLJANA, Slovenia – Kaja Juvan has successfully advanced through the qualifications for the WTA 250 tournament in Canton, China, securing her place in the main draw. On Saturday, Juvan, ranked 106th in the WTA, defeated China’s Anna Yang 7-5, 6-2 in the first round of qualifications. In the second round, she faced Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch, ranked 144th, and triumphed after three sets with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
In her first match against Yang, Juvan started strong by breaking Yang’s serve three times, taking the first set with confidence. However, in the second set, Korpatsch fought back, overcoming a shaky start to take control and win the set 6-3. Juvan faced significant pressure in the final set when she fell behind 0-40 on her serve at 4-4. Demonstrating resilience, she saved all three break points and came back to lead 5-4, ultimately clinching the match.
Juvan’s success means she joins fellow Slovenian Veronika Erjavec in the main tournament draw. Erjavec, ranked 105th in the WTA, had already secured her spot. She will face the 3rd seed of the tournament, Germany’s Tatjana Maria, in her first match. Maria is currently ranked 43rd in the WTA.
In the qualifications results, Juvan triumphed in the following matches: 1st round against Yang (Slo/3) 7-5, 6-2; 2nd round against Korpatsch (Ger/12) 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Meanwhile, Erjavec overcame Maria (Ger/3) with scores of 6-4, 6-7, 6-2.
