Kalani Sitake Byu Football Coach

PROVO, UtahKalani Sitake, head coach of BYU football, is focusing on joy and personal stories rather than just the upcoming rivalry with Utah. During an interview, Sitake, who recently turned 50, delighted in photos of my toddler, showing a personal side to his coaching approach.

In his tenure as BYU’s head coach, Sitake has maintained an undefeated AP Top 25 record. His leadership style includes heartfelt gestures and an emphasis on creating a team culture built on friendship rather than rivalry.

BYU assistant coaches and former players describe team meetings as lively and engaging, with weekly karaoke sessions to encourage camaraderie. Every Thursday, players and coaches belt out songs, fostering an environment where everyone can feel included.

Sitake, who embraces the motto “love and learn,” bases his leadership on the principles of Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose, concepts derived from Daniel Pink‘s book “Drive.” He believes that allowing players ownership over their actions amplifies their commitment to the team.

Under Sitake’s guidance, the Cougars have recorded just two losing seasons in the past nine years. This season, BYU is ranked No. 15 and has begun with a 6-0 record, showcasing the effectiveness of his people-first strategy.

In meetings, Sitake encourages dialogue, allowing players to express their thoughts and ideas, which has proven essential in connecting with the younger generation of athletes. His approach aims to help players see their worth beyond the football field by focusing on personal development.

Reflecting on his upbringing in a single-parent household in Hawaii, Sitake emphasizes gratitude for every moment, regardless of circumstances. His father, Tom Sitake, who raised Kalani and his siblings, imparted lessons about resilience and community support as they faced financial challenges.

Sitake’s vivid memories of a Christmas spent singing in a car with his family, despite having little material possessions, serve as his guiding philosophy: true joy comes from shared experiences and support, reinforcing his belief that the core of leadership lies within the heart.

As Sitake prepares for the upcoming rivalry game against Utah, he holds fast to the values that define his coaching philosophy, making joy and connection the cornerstones of the BYU football program.
