PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Ryan Kalkbrenner scored a game-high 35 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, leading Creighton to an 80-69 victory over Providence on Wednesday night at Amica Mutual Pavilion. The win marked the Bluejays’ eighth consecutive victory and improved their Big East Conference record to 10-2.
Kalkbrenner, a 7-foot-1 center, dominated the game, especially in the second half, where he scored 20 points. His performance helped Creighton overcome a slow start, as he initially missed his first five shots before finding his rhythm. Steven Ashworth complemented Kalkbrenner with 23 points and six assists, including several key plays that sealed the win for the Bluejays.
‘They played a great game,’ Providence coach Kim English said. ‘Well organized. Very, very smart. Obviously, two of the best players in our league—that’s a great advantage to have.’
Providence, now 11-12 overall and 5-7 in the Big East, struggled in the final minutes, scoring just three points in the last 8:59. Corey Floyd Jr. led the Friars with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Jayden Pierre added 14 points and five assists.
The Bluejays’ victory was hard-fought, as they trailed briefly in the second half before taking control. Kalkbrenner’s strong performance and Ashworth’s clutch shooting proved decisive. ‘We’ve had a hard time winning here,’ Creighton coach Greg McDermott said. ‘I expected a physical, great game. And that’s what it was.’
Kalkbrenner’s 35 points were the most by any player against Providence this season. His double-double marked his seventh of the campaign. Ashworth, meanwhile, continued his strong senior season, knocking down 7 of 15 shots and 3 of 9 from 3-point range.
The game also saw Providence struggle with injuries, as three potential starters—Bryce Hopkins, Jabri Abdur-Rahim, and Wesley Cardet Jr.—were sidelined. ‘It’s been a challenge,’ English said. ‘Just coaching the guys we have available to the best of our ability. We’re going to keep coaching them to play to the best of their ability.’
Creighton will look to extend its winning streak Saturday when it hosts Marquette, while Providence aims to bounce back on the road against Butler.
