WASHINGTON, D.C. — Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff are preparing to leave the nation’s capital as Harris concludes her term, with plans to return to California and potentially explore a new home in New York City. Emhoff, the first man to hold the title of Second Gentleman, is set to resume his legal career after stepping away from his role at DLA Piper four years ago.

Harris, who officially left office on Monday, has not yet announced her next steps but is expected to write books about her political career and passion for food and cooking, according to multiple sources. Allies have also speculated about a potential run for California’s gubernatorial seat in 2026, though Harris has not confirmed her intentions.

Emhoff, who served as a ‘Distinguished Visitor from Practice’ at Georgetown Law School during his time in Washington, will return to legal work with a new firm, splitting his time between offices in New York and Los Angeles. Sources close to the couple revealed they have been apartment hunting in Manhattan, with Emhoff reportedly touring a $20,000-a-month three-bedroom unit in the Park Loggia building on West 61st Street earlier this month.

‘The soon-to-be-former VEEP and Second Gentleman intend for Los Angeles to continue to be their base,’ an unnamed source told the New York Post. However, the source added that Emhoff has been ‘casting his eye over some homes in the Big Apple on the couple’s behalf.’ The couple’s primary residence remains their home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Emhoff reflected on his time in Washington in a recent social media post, writing, ‘Never did I imagine that this kid who grew up in New Jersey would one day be at the White House. It has been an incredible honor to serve as our nation’s first Second Gentleman.’

Meanwhile, Harris has kept a low profile since her unsuccessful presidential bid in November. Her allies have been discussing her political future, with some suggesting she could run for California governor in 2026. However, Harris has not publicly addressed these rumors.

As the couple transitions to life outside the White House, their potential move to New York has sparked interest. Emhoff’s daughter lives in Brooklyn, adding to the family’s ties to the city. The Park Loggia building, where Emhoff was reportedly seen touring an apartment, offers luxury amenities, including 24/7 doorman service, a rooftop terrace with Central Park views, and a fitness center.

While the couple’s plans remain fluid, their return to California and potential New York residence mark a new chapter for Harris and Emhoff as they navigate life after the vice presidency.
