Vice President Kamala Harris has been on the Democratic campaign trail for less than three months as the party’s presidential candidate. During this period, she has faced continuous criticisms from former President Donald Trump. Harris has been fervently defending her political record while outlining her plans for the American public.

In a recent edition of 60 Minutes, correspondent Bill Whitaker conducted interviews with Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. This marked Whitaker’s third interview with Harris and his first with Walz. The discussions revolved around critical issues such as the economy, immigration, and foreign policy, with the election date looming on November 5.

Whitaker questioned Harris regarding the U.S.’s influence over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East. The Biden administration has advocated for a ceasefire in Gaza in light of the Israel-Hamas conflict, which has significantly dominated international headlines.

Addressing the prolonged Russia-Ukraine conflict, Harris emphasized her stance against negotiating with Russian President Vladimir Putin without Ukraine’s involvement, stressing, “Ukraine must have a say in the future of Ukraine.” She criticized Trump’s suggestion that he could swiftly end the war, outlining it as “about surrender.”

The televised segment did not feature former President Trump, who declined a participation invitation after initially accepting. “You’re going to hear conversations that are about himself and all of his personal grievances,” Harris remarked about Trump’s campaign rallies.

Economic issues remain at the forefront as the election approaches. Harris defended the Biden administration’s achievements, including low unemployment rates. She proposed new measures such as a federal ban on price gouging and tax incentives for first-time home buyers and small business owners.

Harris also discussed solutions to immigration challenges, supporting the Biden administration’s recent measures on asylum seekers. She underscored the necessity for Congressional action, stating, “We need Congress to be able to act to actually fix the problem.”

Earlier attempts to pass border security legislation were thwarted after Trump allegedly encouraged Republican opposition. “Donald Trump got word that this bill was afoot and he wants to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem,” Harris claimed.

Governor Tim Walz, Harris’s running mate, has transitioned from relative obscurity beyond Minnesota to the national spotlight. Since joining the ticket, Walz has addressed criticisms, including those from his debate with Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance, where Walz remarked on distinguishing between himself and Trump.

Bill Whitaker, an acclaimed 60 Minutes journalist, has built a reputation for covering significant news events globally over his extensive career with CBS News.
