INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Arrow McLaren team principal Tony Kanaan intends to keep things steady as they gear up for the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 25, 2025. Despite their driver Pato O'Ward finishing just short against Josef Newgarden of Team Penske in the 2024 race, Kanaan insists his team is not changing its approach.

Kanaan, a previous winner of the Indy 500 in 2013, leads a strong four-car lineup that includes O’Ward, Christian Lundgaard, and others. Kanaan draws on his experience as he emphasizes the importance of putting oneself in a position to win. “Every time I came to this race, I had to put myself in a position to win,” Kanaan said. “You have to approach it carefully and give it your all.”

Reflecting on last year’s narrow loss, Kanaan admitted uncertainty about the reasons behind their defeat but is focused on future improvements. “We can always look ahead and strategize for better outcomes,” he added. “We have fast cars and respect for the racetrack.” Kanaan’s resolve is firm as he prepares to support O’Ward in their quest for victory.

O’Ward’s prowess makes him a focal point for the team, with Kanaan expressing confidence in their combined abilities. “I told Pato, ‘If I could drive the car,’” Kanaan said jokingly about their talented driver. “But he’s the best guy on the wheel.”

Arrow McLaren currently features two drivers in the top five of the IndyCar standings, with Lundgaard in third place and O’Ward just behind. Kanaan remains realistic about their chances this season, acknowledging the strong performance from leader Alex Palou, who is ahead in points. “Our focus must remain unchanged,” he noted. “We have a plan and must execute it.”

Looking ahead to the 500, Kanaan encouraged a consistent approach without letting expectations weigh them down. “I’ve learned that such expectations can be destructive,” he remarked. “We’re committed to racing hard and focusing on what we can control.”

As the team nears the 2025 Indy 500, they remain focused on their goals, eager to capitalize on their strengths and capitalize on the opportunities for improvement. “We’ve been making progress, and racing doesn’t forgive you. You’re only as good as your last race,” Kanaan concluded.
