NEW YORK, N.Y. — Karl-Anthony Towns, the 29-year-old center originally drafted first overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2015, is making waves in his new role with the New York Knicks. Just before the 2024-25 NBA season began, Towns was unexpectedly traded, leaving behind the franchise that had been his home for nearly a decade.

Despite a blend of sadness and excitement about the move, Towns is keen to embrace the vibrant energy of New York City. On The Backyard Podcast hosted by Brooklyn Nets star D'Angelo Russell, he shared insights about his transition from Minneapolis to Manhattan. “It’s good, it’s crazy, ’cause you know, for me, I grew up here,” Towns said. “I was used to always having nobody. In Minnesota, it was always like nobody came to the games and now everybody comes to the games.”

The shift from the relatively quieter audience in Minnesota to the enthusiastic Knicks fans has been significant for Towns. Frequent family support at games has added to the experience, with relatives now able to cheer him on courtside. His prior home, Minnesota, had its share of challenges, including lower attendance and noise levels at games.

John Calipari, Kentucky’s head coach during Towns’ college years, praised him before the 2015 draft, emphasizing his defensive skills, versatility, and outgoing personality. Calipari noted, “You can put him on the Knicks and he’s an NBA All-Star.” After eight years with Minnesota, Towns is eager to unlock his full potential in New York.

Russell also inquired about Towns’ property in Minnesota, specifically if he built or renovated the home. Towns recounted the experience, saying, “Minnesota was… it just came like that. It was already furnished. We went ground up. So it was pretty cool.”

In 2018, Towns secured a five-year, $190 million contract, enabling him to invest in a $4.52 million lake house in Medina, Minnesota. The purchase reflects his achievements and lifestyle almost akin to royalty. Questions loom regarding whether Towns is now thriving in New York or if he would have fared better remaining with the Timberwolves.

As Towns steps into this new chapter, he carries with him a mix of ambition and nostalgia. His journey from playing at Kentucky to facing fame with the Timberwolves, and now the spotlight with the Knicks, paints a picture of growth. While he embraces the bright lights of New York, his roots in Minnesota remain strong, evident through his lake house and lasting memories.

As Towns continues to evolve on the court and in life, one thing is clear — he shines brightly, regardless of the jersey he wears.
