Karl-Anthony Towns Faces Loss Amid Rivalry Accusations

LOS ANGELES — Karl-Anthony Towns addressed the emotional impact of losing a family friend while facing accusations from podcaster Draymond Green regarding his absence from recent games. Towns, who rejoined the New York Knicks ahead of their scheduled game against the Los Angeles Lakers, openly discussed his struggles dealing with the death of Sarah Holtzman, who passed away due to breast cancer.
“This is one of those moments where I had to be there for my family and be there for the kids that lost somebody really special to them,” Towns said. His remarks came just hours after Green insinuated on his podcast that Towns may have been avoiding Butler due to their long-standing rivalry.
Towns has experienced multiple losses, including his mother, Jaqueline Cruz, and other relatives who died from COVID-19 complications. Reflecting on these experiences, he emphasized the importance of appreciating life. “All the losses I’ve had have taught me how to appreciate life and find joy in the work,” Towns stated.
Despite his candid reflections, Green, who plays for the Golden State Warriors, suggested that Towns faked an injury to avoid facing Butler. “Some would say he didn’t play because Jimmy was in the building,” Green noted, though he admitted he lacked evidence for his claim.
Towns was officially excused for ‘personal reasons’ earlier in the week, dismissing any notion that he was injured. “I don’t really want to talk about [the situation],” he said. “But I do appreciate the organization and my teammates for their support during this time.”
In a broader context, the Knicks are currently in a strong position as they approach the playoffs. They have transformed into one of the league’s top teams in clutch situations, defined as the final minutes of close games. Towns, alongside teammate Jalen Brunson, is a pivotal figure in that success.
Brunson has demonstrated impressive performance under pressure, and his contributions have solidified the Knicks’ playoff potential. “If we’re in a close game, he’s one of the few guys in the league you can count on to get the job done,” teammate Josh Hart said about Brunson.
The Knicks are also working on reintegrating center Mitchell Robinson, who made his season debut after recovering from ankle surgery. Robinson, who acknowledged his playing time was limited, contributed significantly when on the court.
As the Knicks look to maintain their momentum heading into upcoming games, all eyes will remain on the dynamic between Towns and Butler, especially in light of Green’s comments.
