Kate Upton Jokes About Missing Innings Due to MLB Pitch Clock
Kate Upton, wife of Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander, humorously admitted to missing two innings of a baseball game due to MLB‘s new pitch clock. The supermodel shared her experience during an interview on SiriusXM in April 2023, highlighting how the faster-paced games have changed the fan experience.
“The pitch clock sped [the game] up so much. I’m like, ‘How did I miss two innings? I just went to the bathroom.’ Like, it’s so much faster,” Upton said. The pitch clock, implemented in 2023, has significantly reduced game times, leaving fans with less time for breaks.
Before the pitch clock, fans could take bathroom breaks or grab snacks without missing much of the action. Now, with games moving at a quicker pace, fans must plan their breaks more carefully. Upton’s lighthearted comment resonated with many baseball enthusiasts who have experienced similar situations.
The pitch clock has been a major adjustment for players and fans alike. Pitchers like Verlander, who spent years working at their own pace, had to adapt to the new rules, which require them to deliver pitches within 15 seconds with no runners on base and 20 seconds with runners on base.
Upton also shared insights into the unique experience of being a pitcher’s wife. “I think pitcher wives are a little different than position player wives because position players play every single game, so they can’t be as connected to every single play. I feel like there’s a more nervous energy with starting pitchers’ wives because it’s once every five days,” she explained.
Despite the challenges, Upton remains a dedicated supporter of her husband, often seen cheering him on from the stands. The couple, who married in 2017 and have a daughter named Genevieve, have become one of baseball’s most beloved pairs.
The pitch clock has undeniably transformed the MLB landscape, creating a faster, more dynamic game. While it has taken some getting used to, players and fans are gradually adapting to the new rhythm of America’s pastime.
