Katie Volynets Dominates in Charleston Open First Round

TORONTO, Ontario, Canada — Katie Volynets delivered an impressive performance on Monday, crushing Canadian qualifier Katherine Sebov 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the second round of the Credit One Charleston Open. The 23-year-old from California required less than an hour to secure the victory, showcasing her strong serve and court dominance.
Volynets showcased her skill by landing 87 percent of her first serves and winning 81 percent of those points. Notably, she did not face any break points during the match, demonstrating her control on the court.
“I felt really good out there. Everything just clicked for me today,” Volynets said after the match. “I tried to stay aggressive and make sure I executed my game plan.”
She wasn’t the only American making waves on Monday. Robin Montgomery defeated Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova 6-1, 6-3, Caroline Dolehide triumphed over Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-4, 6-1, and Caty McNally came back with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory against Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina.
Additionally, Australian Ajla Tomljanovic, France’s Varvara Gracheva, and Russian players Veronika Kudermetova and Polina Kudermetova also advanced in the tournament. Meanwhile, adverse weather conditions led to the cancellation of the opening-day slate at the Copa Colsanitas set to take place in Bogotá, Colombia.
