Kayaker Trapped in Mouth of Humpback Whale off Chile

PUERTO VARAS, Chile — A kayaker was briefly trapped in the mouth of a humpback whale off the coast of Chilean Patagonia, before being released unharmed. The unusual encounter occurred while 20-year-old Adrián Simancas was kayaking with his father in the scenic waters of the region.

According to reports, the incident took place on February 13, 2025, when the massive whale unexpectedly surfaced, engulfing Adrián and his yellow kayak. His father, Dell Simancas, who was just meters away, recorded the event on his phone while encouraging his son to remain calm.

“I thought it had eaten me and swallowed me,” Adrián recalled, expressing his surprise and shock after the momentary capture. The whale released him after just a few seconds, allowing him to escape without injury.

Witnesses, including Dell, noted that the whale’s behavior seemed curious rather than aggressive. Experts in marine biology suggest such encounters can occur when whales feel curious about their environment, particularly near kayakers or small boats.

This incident serves as a reminder of the unique and unpredictable interactions that can occur between humans and marine wildlife. The region of Chilean Patagonia is known for its diverse marine life, including a population of humpback whales that migrate through its waters.

The Simancas family has since expressed their gratitude for the safe outcome of the encounter, and Adrián emphasized the need for caution while kayaking in such areas. “It was exhilarating and terrifying at the same time,” he said.
