Keane Reflects on Rashford’s Rise Ahead of FA Cup Quarter-Finals

UK, March 2025 — Will Keane is eager to face his former Manchester United teammate Marcus Rashford in the FA Cup quarter-finals, marking a significant moment for both players. The match, scheduled for later today, represents a crucial opportunity for Keane, 32, following his goal that propelled his Championship side into this stage of the competition for the first time since the 1965-66 season.
Keane’s current form comes after a successful loan spell at Aston Villa for Rashford, who has played a key role in re-establishing himself in the England squad with four assists since January. Ironically, it was Keane’s injury that opened the door for Rashford’s debut as an 18-year-old in February 2016, a pivotal moment in Rashford’s career.
Reflecting on the timing, Keane stated, “It was probably unfortunate timing for myself. Football is all about timing and making the most of those moments. The way it fell into place for Marcus at that time, he took his opportunity when it came.”
Despite his own path diverging from Manchester United, Keane remains proud of his career. “When you come through the academy as a United fan, you always want to keep hold of that dream of making it there,” he said. “I still had a lot of good clubs and a long career after that.”
Keane also expressed excitement about the upcoming match against Rashford. “I’ve not seen Marcus for a couple of years. It looks like he’s enjoying football. Hopefully, he can have an off day for this one if he’s playing — but it will be great to see him again.”
For Keane, this Cup run has been one of the highlights of his career. “It’s up there,” he said. “The manager Paul Heckingbottom made it clear when he came in that a good cup run can bring everyone together and help drive the season. It’s definitely done that. Hopefully, we can go one step further.”
As the only Championship team left in the competition, Keane noted the aspirations of his side: “We all aspire to be Premier League players. This match is a great challenge for all of us.”
