Running back Keaton Mitchell is poised to make his 2024 debut for the Baltimore Ravens, marking a significant return from a serious injury. Mitchell, who suffered a full tear of the ACL in his left knee in December 2023, is expected to be activated off the physically unable to perform (PUP) list on Thursday, ahead of the Ravens’ game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Mitchell has been a full participant in practice all week, indicating his readiness to return to the field. His activation is contingent on no unforeseen developments, but all signs point to his inclusion in the active roster. The Ravens created a roster spot for Mitchell by waiving defensive end Yannick Ngakoue, who had recorded 1.5 sacks and four quarterback hits in five games this season.

As an undrafted rookie last season, Mitchell made a notable impact on the Ravens’ rushing attack, averaging 8.4 yards on 47 carries and totaling 396 rushing yards in eight games. He also scored touchdown runs of 39 and 40 yards, showcasing his explosive playmaking ability. Mitchell’s return is anticipated to complement the power running of Derrick Henry, who leads the NFL with 1,052 rushing yards and 13 total touchdowns.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh has been positive about Mitchell’s progress, describing it as “stellar” since his return to practice on October 23. Mitchell’s speed and agility are expected to add a new dimension to the Ravens’ offense, which has been dominant this season, ranking first in total yards and rushing yards.

In addition to his role as a running back, Mitchell could also contribute as a kickoff returner, an area where the Ravens have struggled this season, ranking 27th with an average of 24.2 yards per return.
