San Antonio, Texas — Keldon Johnson, once the primary scoring option for the San Antonio Spurs, is embracing a new role this NBA season. Although his scoring numbers are down, Johnson is demonstrating remarkable growth and adaptability, contributing to the Spurs’ early success.
As the season began, there were questions about how the longest-tenured Spur would fit in with a roster packed with talent. A crowded backcourt combined with the team’s decision to use two center lineups raised concerns about Johnson’s playing time and role. But through the first few games, his influence has been undeniable.
This season, Johnson is averaging his lowest points, assists, and three-point attempts since his rookie year. In the past, he averaged over 22 points per game, but this year he has shifted to a supporting role, focusing on scoring inside and rebounding. “Keldon is impacting winning more than he ever has, and it’s really cool to see,” said Coach Mitch Johnson after a recent win against the Brooklyn Nets.
Johnson’s transformation into a more defensive, opportunistic player means he is now focusing on securing offensive rebounds and scoring from second-chance opportunities. He averages three offensive rebounds per game, contributing to one-third of his total points. According to stats, the Spurs have been more successful with Johnson on the floor, scoring better than they have in recent seasons.
His ability to simplify his game for the team has impressed coaches and fans alike. While he hasn’t completely reshaped his playstyle, he has adjusted to fit into the team’s needs. Johnson’s improved shooting percentage, especially on wide-open shots, showcases his efforts to refine his game further.
Defensively, Johnson has gone from being seen as a liability to being a reliable contributor. Opponents are hitting just 25.7% of their shots when he is the closest defender, highlighting his improvement. This development is crucial for the Spurs, who have been performing well defensively this season.
As the season progresses, Johnson’s role will be tested even more with the return of fellow player Jeremy Sochan. However, Johnson’s adaptability and energy suggest a positive synergy on the court. The Spurs’ coaching staff believes their system can accommodate both players as they rely on aggressive play and a focus on the interior game.
In a young season marked by potential, Johnson’s ability to adjust and make significant contributions without running the offense has not only renewed his place in the lineup but solidified his status as a key player for the Spurs. “I’ll do anything asked of me to win,” Johnson stated, exhibiting his commitment to the team’s success.
