Kenneth Gainwell Philadelphia Eagles Running Back

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Kenneth Gainwell, the Philadelphia Eagles running back, is entering free agency after the NFL postseason, potentially marking the end of his tenure with the team. The former fifth-round draft pick, who joined the Eagles in 2021, has been a rotational player but has yet to secure a starting role.

Gainwell, a product of the University of Memphis, showed promise in his rookie season with 68 carries for 291 yards and five touchdowns, along with 33 receptions for 253 yards and a touchdown. Despite contributing to the Eagles’ Super Bowl run in 2022, he has struggled to establish himself as a consistent starter. In the 2024 season, he recorded 84 carries for 364 yards and two touchdowns, drawing criticism for underperformance.

With the Eagles likely prioritizing younger talent like rookie Will Shipley, Gainwell’s future with the team is uncertain. “As many free agents as the Eagles have, Gainwell could be one of those not returning,” a source close to the team said. The Eagles may opt to let him test the market, where he could attract interest from teams seeking depth at running back.

Potential suitors include the Los Angeles Chargers, who are looking to bolster their backfield. The Chargers, who missed the 2025 playoffs, could pair Gainwell with Gus Edwards or release Edwards to bring back J.K. Dobbins. Similarly, the Kansas City Chiefs, who struggled with injuries at running back in 2024, might see Gainwell as a reliable backup to Isiah Pacheco.

The Baltimore Ravens and Carolina Panthers are also possible destinations. The Ravens need depth behind Lamar Jackson, while the Panthers could use Gainwell as a temporary replacement for Miles Sanders, who is expected to be traded this offseason.

Gainwell’s market value remains unclear, but his versatility and postseason experience could make him an attractive option for teams in need of a complementary back. “He’s no superstar, but he doesn’t need to be,” an NFL analyst said. “He can be a reliable chain-mover and red-zone contributor.”

As the NFL offseason approaches, Gainwell’s next move will be closely watched. Whether he returns to Philadelphia or finds a new home, his role in the league’s evolving running back landscape will be a key storyline.
