Kenny Omega Credits AJ Styles for Key Career Moments and AEW’s Birth
Los Angeles, California — Kenny Omega reflected on the profound impact AJ Styles has had on his wrestling career and the creation of All Elite Wrestling (AEW) during a recent interview.
As AJ Styles prepares for retirement next year, Omega highlighted three pivotal moments that shaped his own journey in professional wrestling. Their paths first crossed in 2006 on the independent scene in Canada, before either of them achieved international fame.
Before their match, Omega was contemplating stepping away from wrestling entirely after becoming disillusioned with WWE‘s developmental league. “When I saw the business end of professional wrestling, I thought, ‘Maybe this isn’t for me because it isn’t fun anymore,’” Omega told CBS Sports. However, a match against Styles would alter his perspective.
“That’s a great way to go out,” Omega thought about the match. To his surprise, Omega gained new confidence from their bout. “The chemistry was naturally there. I thought, ‘Wow, this is what wrestling someone at this level feels like.’”
Omega was inspired to pursue greater heights in his career, especially after one more encounter with Styles in New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW). Omega recalled how Styles’ leadership style and charisma motivated him. “I wanted to see the making of a champion and how you do it,” he said.
Styles’ departure from NJPW proved to be a turning point for Omega and the Young Bucks, who turned on Styles, leading to the formation of The Elite. “By him turning his back and allowing that moment to happen… that kind of led to AEW,” Omega noted.
AEW President Tony Khan founded the promotion with Omega, Cody Rhodes, and the Young Bucks, who serve as executive vice presidents. As Omega prepares for his match at AEW Full Gear, his partnership with Styles continues to resonate. “AJ’s involvement is very pivotal for the company and our careers,” he added.
Omega’s relationship with Styles symbolizes how professional wrestling’s landscape can shift through mutual influence and collaboration. With Styles announcing his retirement soon, Omega’s gratitude highlights the legacy of a wrestler who has profoundly impacted multiple generations.
