2025 Kentucky Derby Churchill Downs Horse Racing

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky — The 2025 Kentucky Derby is set to take place this Saturday, May 3, at historic Churchill Downs. The event, known as “The Run for the Roses,” will kick off at 12 PM ET, with live coverage on USA Network and NBC starting at 2:30 PM.

This year marks the 151st running of the prestigious race. Veteran trainer D. Wayne Lukas, 89, aims for his first Derby victory in 26 years with his horse, American Promise. Lukas made history last year as the oldest trainer to win a Triple Crown race. Meanwhile, Bob Baffert returns to the Derby for the first time after a three-year suspension, looking to achieve a record seventh win with his horse, Citizen Bull.

Among the favorites this year is Journalism, trained by Michael McCarthy. Journalism is making only his second appearance in the Derby, with his previous horse finishing ninth in 2024. Other contenders include Sovereignty and Tappan Street, alongside United Equity, which competes under Baffert’s guidance.

The Kentucky Derby has a rich history, having started in 1875. Its origins trace back to Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark’s inspiration from the Epsom Derby in England. The race has evolved over the years, attracting fans and bettors alike.

The official post time for the 2025 Kentucky Derby is set for 6:57 PM ET, making it the highlight of a 14-race day at Churchill Downs. Tickets for spectators are available, with prices starting at $105. As always, 20 horses will race, earning entry through a qualifying points system implemented in 2013.

Fans anticipate the event, with a variety of viewing options including streaming on Peacock. With the excitement building, the stage is set for an unforgettable race on Saturday.
