Kentucky Derby Live Coverage 2025

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The annual Kentucky Derby kicks off today with its 151st running at Churchill Downs, marking a long-standing American tradition in horse racing.

This year’s Derby promises excitement as the first race begins at 11 a.m. ET, followed by the main event at approximately 6:57 p.m. ET, broadcast live on NBC.

Churchill Downs, named after Samuel Churchill, opened in 1875 and has become a key venue, hosting not only the Kentucky Derby but also the Kentucky Oaks annually. The iconic racetrack has a capacity of 170,000 and has hosted the Breeders’ Cup nine times.

Derby week began with a vibrant atmosphere last night, featuring notable horse trainers like D. Wayne Lukas and Bob Baffert, the latter attending his first Derby after a three-year ban. Trainer Michael McCarthy was spotted with his favorite horse, Journalism, during the Derby draw.

Journalism, currently favored at 3-1, drew the eighth position, a historically advantageous spot. Only Sovereignty at 5-1 and Sandman at 6-1 have lower odds but occupy higher post positions, which drew disappointment from the crowd.

The day features 14 races, culminating with the prestigious Derby. Viewers can also stream the event on platforms such as Peacock and NBC Sports.

As the Derby continues, fans can expect thrilling moments, in-depth betting analysis, and updates from The Athletic. Viewers are encouraged to join in on the excitement surrounding this celebrated event.
