Kenyan rugby player Daniel Bett has received a two-match suspension following a citing incident during the World Rugby U20 Trophy match against Hong Kong China. The match took place on July 17, 2024, in Scotland, a key event for young rugby players aiming to showcase their talents on an international platform.

The suspension was imposed as a result of a lifting tackle that Bett executed in the match. This misconduct was brought to the attention of officials who subsequently cited him for foul play, marking a significant disciplinary action in the tournament.

The World Rugby U20 Championship and the U20 Trophy are currently implementing a streamlined red card sanction trial, a new initiative aimed at simplifying the disciplinary processes within the sport. This trial is a product of discussions held at the Shape of the Game forum that took place earlier in the year, illustrating the sport’s commitment to improving its officiating standards.

According to the findings of the Red Card Sanction Committee (RCSC), the incident in question met the criteria for what constitutes “foul play.” This definition encompasses situations where a player attempts to engage in a legal rugby action but makes minor errors in technique or timing, or engages in reckless behavior that violates the game’s rules.

The RCSC convened on July 18, 2024, under the leadership of Jean Noel Couraud from France. He was joined by two former international rugby players, John Langford from Australia and Stefan Terblanche from South Africa, who lent their expertise to the proceedings.

After a thorough review of the evidence, including multiple camera angles of the incident, the committee concluded that the actions of Bett were sufficiently serious to warrant a standard two-match suspension for the identified foul play.

Bett accepted the ruling presented by the committee. As a result, he will miss two crucial fixtures ahead. The matches he will be sidelined from include the Kenya Sevens tournament – Leg 1, scheduled for July 27-28, 2024, and Leg 2 of the tournament on August 3-4, 2024.

This decision highlights the increasing focus on player safety and the enforcement of disciplinary standards within rugby. The introduction of the red card sanction trial is a step towards ensuring that incidents of foul play are addressed in a consistent and fair manner, promoting a safer playing environment for all athletes involved.

As rugby continues to grow in popularity, ensuring the integrity of the game and the safety of its players remains a top priority for governing bodies. The actions taken against Bett are a clear indication that rugby is moving towards a more stringent and thorough review process when it comes to disciplinary matters.

For further details regarding the ongoing red card sanction trial, stakeholders and fans are encouraged to follow the updates from Rugby’s governing bodies.
