Kenyan Runner Bernard Sang Wins 2024 Lagos City Marathon

Kenyan long-distance runner Bernard Sang emerged victorious at the 2024 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, securing the Gold-Label 4km race in a swift time of 02:16:49 to claim the $50,000 prize.

The 32-year-old athlete, who will soon turn 33, showcased his prowess but did not surpass his personal best of 2:10:59 set in Istanbul back in 2021.

Sang’s win adds to the list of Kenyan champions at the prestigious 42km Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, with previous victories in 2016, 2017, 2020, and 2021.

His compatriots Cheprot and Edwin Kiptoo also put up impressive performances, clinching 2nd and 3rd place respectively, reinforcing Kenya’s dominance in marathons.

In the women’s division, Ethiopian athlete Kebene Chala emerged as the victor, becoming the first woman to cross the finish line in the 2024 edition of the marathon.

Over 81 elite runners from around the world, including 15 refugee athletes endorsed by the United Nations, graced the 9th Access Bank Lagos City Marathon hosted by Nilayo Sports Management Limited, led by Chief Bukola Olopade.
