Ketel Marte Signs Six-Year Extension with Diamondbacks Worth Up to $149.5 Million

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Ketel Marte has agreed to a six-year contract extension worth $116.5 million with the Arizona Diamondbacks, as announced by his agent, Charisse Dash, on Wednesday. The contract begins this season and runs through 2030, featuring a player option for 2031 valued at $11.5 million. The new deal replaces Marte’s previous five-year, $76 million contract signed in 2022, and could escalate to a total value of $149.5 million with performance incentives.
The 31-year-old Marte has been a pivotal player for the Diamondbacks, finishing third in MVP voting last season with a .932 OPS over 136 games. He recorded career highs with 36 home runs and 95 RBIs, solidifying his status as a central figure in a franchise aiming for sustained success.
“I just want to be here forever,” Marte stated after contributing an RBI single in a recent 4-3 victory. He has maintained a .280 batting average and .348 on-base percentage through his career, which spans 11 seasons and includes 143 home runs and 515 RBIs. Marte started his career with the Seattle Mariners before transitioning to the Diamondbacks, where he has primarily played second base.
Manager Torey Lovullo emphasized the significance of Marte’s extension, stating, “It makes a statement that we believe in the core group of players… There’s a special bond on this team, and it means we’ll be together a long time.” This agreement highlights Arizona’s ongoing strategy to secure its key players amid increasing competition in the National League West.
Marte’s new contract is part of a broader trend for the Diamondbacks, who recently secured pitcher Brandon Pfaadt with a five-year deal and signed shortstop Geraldo Perdomo and reliever Justin Martinez to extensions. Additionally, the team bolstered its roster by signing free agent Corbin Burnes to a six-year, $210 million contract earlier this offseason.
As the Diamondbacks contend with rising payroll demands, this extension adds long-term security for Marte while providing financial flexibility moving forward. With the team now ranking 11th in the league in payroll at over $195 million, executive leadership, including general manager Mike Hazen, has expressed commitment to investing in a competitive roster.
Marte’s new deal not only secures the player’s future with the organization but also showcases Arizona’s ambition to compete at a high level in the coming years. As Marte enters his late 30s while still in the prime of his career, this contract solidifies the Diamondbacks’ investment in their future.
