Kevin Behrens Apologizes for Alleged Homophobic Remarks
In a recent development, Kevin Behrens, a striker for VfL Wolfsburg, has issued an apology following a reported incident involving an alleged homophobic remark. The incident is said to have occurred during a signing session organized by Wolfsburg’s marketing department, where players were asked to autograph fan merchandise, including a jersey designed to promote diversity and tolerance. The jersey featured rainbow-colored logos and names, symbolizing support for the LGBTQ+ community.
According to reports from ‘Sport Bild,’ Behrens allegedly refused to sign the jersey, purportedly making a derogatory comment, “So eine schwule Scheiße unterschreibe ich nicht,” translating to “I won’t sign this gay crap.” While neither Behrens nor the club has confirmed these exact words, the striker has apologized, stating, “My spontaneous comments were absolutely not okay. I would like to apologize for that. The issue was discussed internally, and I ask for understanding that I wish not to comment further.”
In response, VfL Wolfsburg released a statement acknowledging the internal incident, asserting that the remarks were not in line with the club’s values. “During an internal meeting, there were statements made that do not align with VfL Wolfsburg’s stance. The incident was promptly addressed internally,” the club noted, highlighting its commitment to inclusivity and respect.
Teammate Maximilian Arnold supported Behrens, stating to the media, “Kevin has apologized for something that clearly was not appropriate. But everyone makes mistakes. It’s key that such incidents are not repeated, and he deserves a second chance.”
Behrens transferred to VfL Wolfsburg earlier this year from Union Berlin, where he had a more prominent role, even securing a cap for the national team. However, his performance at Wolfsburg has not matched his previous successes, as he has yet to secure a starting position this season. His current contract with the club expires at the end of the season.
