LENS, France — Kevin Danso, the 26-year-old RC Lens defender, has abruptly withdrawn from a loan move to Wolverhampton Wanderers, paving the way for Tottenham Hotspur to pursue a deal for the Austrian international. The transfer, which was nearly finalized, collapsed on Saturday night when Danso’s representatives informed Wolves of their decision, citing interest from Tottenham.

Danso was scheduled to undergo a medical with Wolves on Sunday, but the sudden change of plans has left the Molineux club scrambling for alternatives ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline. The defender, who previously spent a loan spell at Southampton during the 2019-20 season, has been a key figure for Lens, making 128 appearances over four seasons.

Tottenham’s interest in Danso comes amid an injury crisis that has depleted their defensive options. Key players such as Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Radu Dragusin, and Destiny Udogie have all missed significant game time, prompting the North London club to seek reinforcements. Danso’s versatility and experience in both Ligue 1 and the Premier League make him an attractive target for Spurs.

Wolves, meanwhile, had identified Danso as a priority signing following the departure of Maximilian Kilman to West Ham United last summer and the season-ending ACL injury to Yerson Mosquera in September. The club had already secured a loan deal for a defender from Reims earlier this month but will now need to explore other options to bolster their backline.

Danso’s decision to reject Wolves has sparked speculation about his future, with reports suggesting that Tottenham could offer a more lucrative deal or a clearer path to regular first-team football. The Austrian international, who has also attracted interest from Juventus, Stade Rennais, and Aston Villa, remains a highly sought-after player in the transfer market.

As the January transfer window draws to a close, both Tottenham and Wolves are racing against time to finalize their squads for the remainder of the season. Danso’s next move could have significant implications for both clubs as they aim to achieve their respective goals in the Premier League.
