Kevin Durant Secures $90 Million Extension with Houston Rockets
HOUSTON, Texas — NBA star Kevin Durant has agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $90 million with the Houston Rockets, his business partner Rich Kleiman confirmed to ESPN on Sunday. The deal includes a player option for the 2027-28 season.
Durant, 37, was originally eligible for a maximum extension of $120 million, but chose to sacrifice about $30 million to help the Rockets maintain flexibility for future team-building efforts. This decision illustrates Durant’s commitment to a long-term partnership with the franchise.
Since the Rockets acquired Durant in a historic seven-team trade from the Phoenix Suns in July, he has made an immediate impact on the team’s title aspirations, pairing with young stars such as Alperen Sengun and Jabari Smith Jr. The Rockets were the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference last season, and Durant’s seasoned skills are expected to elevate their performance even further.
Last season, Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game over 62 appearances with the Suns. He is highly regarded for his shooting skills, posting an NBA-best 49.7% on jumpers and an impressive 50.9% on off-the-dribble jumpers.
As a result of this extension, Durant’s career earnings will rise to $598.2 million, making him the highest-earning player in NBA history, surpassing LeBron James‘s previous record. Durant has consistently averaged at least 25 points per game for 16 consecutive seasons, which is a league record.
With the Rockets also signing their head coach and securing other key players, the team has emerged as a serious contender this season. Houston opens its regular season on Tuesday night against the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder.
