Kevin Stefanski Hands Over Playcalling Duties, Names Jameis Winston as Browns’ Starter
In a significant move, Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski has decided to relinquish his offensive playcalling duties, handing them over to offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey. This change comes as the Browns prepare to face the Baltimore Ravens on October 27.
Stefanski, who had been calling the offensive plays for the Browns’ first seven games of the season, explained that the decision is aimed at improving the team’s offense. “I’m just always looking at what we can do to just be a little bit better and truth is we have to be better on offense and coach Dorsey is somebody that I rely on very heavily and I just feel like this is the right thing for the team,” Stefanski said.
In addition to the change in playcalling responsibilities, Jameis Winston has been named the starting quarterback for the upcoming game. Winston, who signed a 1-year, $8.7 million contract with the Browns in March, will replace Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who is currently dealing with a finger injury. Deshaun Watson, the team’s primary quarterback, suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in the game against the Cincinnati Bengals and is set to undergo surgery, requiring several months of rehabilitation.
The Browns also made another roster move by signing quarterback Bailey Zappe off the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad. Zappe, who made eight starts over two seasons for the New England Patriots before being released this summer, adds depth to the Browns’ quarterback position.
