Kevin Walters, head coach of the Brisbane Broncos, has announced his resignation from the role he has occupied for four years. Walters expressed his deep connection to the team, stating, “Aside from playing here, it’s been the greatest thrill and honour of my life to have coached the Broncos.” He acknowledged the strains of coaching in the NRL and emphasized the need to prioritize family, who’ve supported him throughout his tenure.

Walters leaves behind a legacy marked by significant progress, having steered the Broncos from receiving the wooden spoon to reaching the Grand Final last year. Underneath his leadership, Walters brought passion and dedication, traits that Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy highlighted in his remarks. “We owe a debt of gratitude to Kevin, for the enormous role he’s played as head coach over the past four years,” Donaghy remarked, acknowledging Walters’ deep affiliation with the team.

The abrupt nature of the departure surprised many, including Broncos captain Adam Reynolds. Reynolds disclosed that the team only learned of Walter’s exit through media reports, describing the announcement as “blind-siding.” “We were as surprised as anyone when the news broke,” Reynolds commented, expressing his respect and appreciation for Walters’ coaching style.

Walters’ term as coach saw him lead the Broncos through 99 NRL games, achieving 50 victories, making him the third longest-serving coach in the club’s history. While 2023 saw them advance to the Grand Final, 2024 proved challenging, concluding in a 12th-place finish which prompted an end-of-season review.

Looking ahead, the Broncos have not yet announced a successor but several names are circulating as potential candidates. Queensland State of Origin assistant coach Josh Hannay and New South Wales State of Origin coach Michael Maguire are believed to be leading contenders. Other possibilities include ex-Eels coach Brad Arthur, currently contracted to Leeds in the Super League, along with experienced NRL figures Jason Demetriou and Justin Holbrook.

Walters’ departure leaves a notable gap in the Broncos leadership at a crucial juncture. Meanwhile, the club has extended an open door for Walters to remain involved, reflecting his significant contributions both on and off the field.
