DUBAI, U.A.E. — The main-draw competition at the ATP 500 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships kicks off Monday, featuring a highly anticipated rematch between Karen Khachanov and Dan Evans. The two players will face off in their first-round match, rekindling memories of their five-set thriller at the U.S. Open last summer.

During their dramatic encounter at Flushing Meadows, Evans triumphed 6-7(8), 7-6(2), 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4 after an arduous five hours and 35 minutes, overcoming a daunting 4-0 deficit in the final set. Remarkably, Evans has maintained a perfect head-to-head record against Khachanov with five consecutive wins, three of which required a final set.

After a challenging 2024 season marked by struggles on the ATP tour, Evans currently ranks 167th in the world. He faced early elimination in his attempts to qualify for the Australian Open and the Rotterdam Open, succumbing to first-round losses against James Trotter and Gregory Blancaneaux, respectively. Despite his past success, Evans’ recent performance on the Challenger circuit has cast doubt on his ability to extend his winning streak against Khachanov.

In contrast, Khachanov appears poised to capitalize on Evans’ current difficulties. The 21st-ranked Russian exhibited strong form in Middle Eastern tournaments, having won the Doha title in February and advancing at least one round in four of his last five appearances in Dubai. Clearly benefiting from his experience, Khachanov aims to assert himself against a struggling opponent.

“I feel confident when I play in this region,” Khachanov said. “I know the conditions and I’ve had some good results here in the past.”

Additionally, the tournament will feature a match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Lorenzo Sonego, marking their fourth encounter. Tsitsipas has won all three previous meetings, defeating Sonego with scores of 6-2, 7-6(2) in the 2021 Miami Open, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 in Cincinnati, and 6-3, 7-6(3) in Rome last year. Despite a recent quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open, Sonego’s performance in subsequent tournaments has been disappointing, leading many analysts to predict another victory for Tsitsipas.

“Tsitsipas is a tough opponent,” Sonego acknowledged. “I’m going to bring my best game to the court, but it doesn’t get easier.”

The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, with a prize pool of $3,237,670, attracts a star-studded lineup, including Andrey Rublev, Daniil Medvedev, and Alexander Zverev, among others. The tournament takes place on hard courts, presenting a competitive setting that has historically favored players with experience in high-stakes matches.

As the action unfolds this week, fans are eager to witness if Evans can maintain his dominance over Khachanov, or if the Russian will redefine the narrative on their rivalry. также, Tsitsipas must fend off Sonego, whose quest for victory adds an intriguing dynamic to an already exciting tournament.
