Khalil Mack Los Angeles Chargers Contract Signing

Los Angeles, CA — Star linebacker Khalil Mack has agreed to a one-year, fully guaranteed contract worth $18 million to remain with the Los Angeles Chargers, the team announced Monday. The decision ensures Mack, a former NFL Defensive Player of the Year, will continue his career with the Chargers, avoiding the free agency market for at least another season.

The 34-year-old Mack, who won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2016, had considered retirement after the 2024 season but ultimately decided to return for his 12th year in the league. This season marks a turning point in his career as he navigates life without former teammate Joey Bosa, after the Chargers recently parted ways with the defensive standout.

Mack experienced a setback during the 2024 season with a dip in his statistics, finishing with only six sacks, which was tied for the second-lowest output of his prolific career. Injuries played a significant role; he strained both groins in Week 9, limiting him to playing just 30 snaps in two games thereafter.

Despite these challenges, Mack maintained a high performance level, leading all Chargers defenders with a 13% pass rush win rate, which earned him a selection to his ninth Pro Bowl. In Los Angeles’ playoff outing, he showcased his skills with two sacks and five quarterback pressures, although he remains winless in five playoff games.

Known for his career performance, Mack’s most productive season was in 2023 when he recorded 17 sacks, including six sacks against his previous team, the Chicago Bears. He joins a robust edge-rushing group that features third-year player Tuli Tuipulotu and veteran Bud Dupree.

Drafted fourth overall in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Raiders, Mack has built a distinguished career with a total of 107.5 career sacks, currently ranking 32nd among all players since 1982. His 142 tackles for loss rank 13th all time.

This latest agreement reflects the Chargers’ commitment to bolster their defense while providing fans with a familiar face as they navigate an unpredictable offseason.
