Kilkenny Triumphs Over Limerick in Final League Match

KILKENNY, Ireland — Kilkenny wrapped up their National Hurling League campaign with a decisive nine-point victory over Limerick on Saturday, demonstrating their dominance with a strong finish to the match. The win, which concluded the league season successfully for the Cats, saw them secure a third triumph after earlier losses to Galway and Tipperary.
Coached by Derek Lyng, the team entered the match at Nowlan Park keen to restore pride on home ground and solidify their place in Division 1 for 2026. The result confirmed Wexford and the 2024 double champions, Clare, would be relegated to Division 1B next season. Furthermore, Limerick’s defeat eliminated them from contention for the league final, irrespective of their next match against Wexford.
Kilkenny took control in the first half, leading by 11 points at halftime with a score of 0-18 to 0-07. The home side maintained their resolute performance despite Limerick’s late push that brought the gap down to just four points. Key contributions from TJ Reid and Martin Keoghan, who scored seven points from play, secured the victory for Kilkenny.
“We looked hungrier and more cohesive today compared to our previous performance against Tipperary,” Reid said after the match. “It was important for us to finish the league on a high note.”
The game started with both teams exchanging points before Kilkenny rallied to score six straight points, establishing an early lead. The team exhibited depth in scoring, with nine players contributing on the scoreboard by halftime, highlighted by Tommy Walsh‘s closing goal during an impressive run early in the match.
Limerick struggled to recover from an injury to Cathal O’Neill, which compounded their difficulties throughout the match. Despite late scoring efforts from Aidan O’Connor and substitutions like Donnacha Ó Dálaigh, Limerick could not overcome the deficit.
As the second half progressed, Limerick improved their tactical approach but ultimately failed to capitalize on their chances. Points from Colin Coughlan and Patrick O’Donovan were insufficient to close the gap completely, and a late flurry of scores by Kilkenny sealed Limerick’s fate.
Paddy Deegan was sent off in stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card, marking a frustrating end to an otherwise victorious afternoon for Kilkenny.
Limerick’s Shane Dowling also contributed significantly with impressive saves but acknowledged that the team didn’t perform at their best. “It’s disappointing not to be in the league final,” Dowling stated. “We need to regroup and focus on our next match.”
In summary, Kilkenny outperformed Limerick with strategic scoring and a well-rounded game plan, demonstrating their strength heading into the next season.
