Killeen Middle School Lockdown Follows Fatal Student Stabbing

KILLEEN, Texas — Roy J. Smith Middle School was placed on lockdown around 11:23 a.m. Monday following a stabbing incident involving two students. Officials from Killeen Independent School District (KISD) confirmed that one student suffered fatal injuries and was transported to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center.
According to Principal Fred Lilly, a message was sent to families stating, “A student was injured and is being transported to receive medical care. At this time, there is no ongoing threat to students or staff, and law enforcement is actively investigating.”
The three-hour lockdown ended after authorities determined there was no further threat. KISD reported that the suspect, also a student, was apprehended and taken into custody by KISD police shortly after the incident.
Officials indicated that emergency medical services (EMS) were on scene within seven minutes to provide care for the injured student. Despite rapid medical assistance, the student succumbed to injuries at the hospital, prompting Killeen police’s criminal investigation unit to open a homicide investigation.
“We are deeply saddened to share the tragic news of a fatal incident at Roy J. Smith Middle School today. Our hearts go out to the family, friends, and school community as we grieve this heartbreaking loss,” KISD stated in a press release.
In response to the incident, KISD will provide counseling and support services for students and staff affected by this tragedy. The district emphasized the importance of safety and ensuring well-being for all individuals on campus.
The police and school district are continuing their investigation into the events leading up to the stabbing, although no identities have been released for the students involved. Principal Lilly expressed concern for the impact this incident has on the entire school community, urging them to come together in support during this difficult time.
Parents and guardians were notified of the lockdown through a text message, with many congregating outside Mana Church in Killeen, where they waited to reunite with their children following the lockdown.
