King’s Plate Postponed Due to Heavy Rain
Mother Nature has decided to intervene, forcing the organizers of the King’s Plate to postpone Canada’s biggest horse race until Friday. This highly anticipated event was supposed to take place at Toronto’s Woodbine Racetrack.
The remaining races for Saturday were cancelled after heavy rainfall made the track unsafe for the horses. Out of 13 scheduled races, eight were called off due to the poor conditions.
Woodbine CEO Michael Copeland described the decision as “incredibly difficult,” noting that the sheer volume of rain in such a short period made the track unsafe. “It came down hard and it was pooling on the track, creating unsafe conditions for the horses. Safety is always our priority,” he explained.
The weather was so severe that some motorists had to leave their cars behind in other parts of Toronto and in Mississauga due to the heavy downpour.
The Plate is a long-standing tradition in Canada, now celebrating its 165th year. It holds the title of North America’s oldest continuously run stakes race. Following the King’s Plate, the next event in Canada’s Triple Crown series is the Price of Wales Stakes, set for September 10 at Fort Erie Race Track, with the Breeders’ Stakes following on September 29 at Woodbine.
