Kirby Smart Discusses Team’s Physicality Ahead of Charlotte Game
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia head football coach Kirby Smart emphasized the importance of physicality in his team during a press conference on Monday. As the Bulldogs prepare for a non-conference game against Charlotte, Smart spoke candidly about players who choose to leave the program for less demanding teams.
“The ones that want to leave, we schedule them,” Smart said. “When they want to leave because they’re not physical, it means they’re probably going to a place that’s not physical. We like those places. We like to play them.”
Smart’s comments came as Georgia wraps up its SEC play with a 7-1 record after a 35-10 victory over Texas on Saturday. He expressed pride in his team’s growth and resilience, particularly as they navigate the challenges of the season.
“Looking forward to this week as we prep. It’s always a special moment for the seniors during their last home game,” Smart said. “We’ll begin the prep for those guys today and this week.”
Following the Texas game, Smart provided an update on junior linebacker C.J. Allen, who is dealing with a knee injury. “He’ll be week-to-week,” he said. “We’ll see when we can get him back.”
Despite Allen’s absence, Smart noted that players like Chris Cole and Raylen Wilson stepped up in the game against Texas. Cole recorded a career-high seven tackles while Wilson contributed on both defense and special teams.
In discussing the contributions of his coaching staff, Smart praised wide receivers coach James Coley for his effective teaching methods. “Coley does a tremendous job. He’s a really good teacher. He’s passionate about his game,” Smart said, indicating that Coley uses NFL examples in training to motivate players.
Smart also highlighted the positive impact of players like Oscar Delp, who have shown considerable growth this season. “He leads. He’s got passion, fire, and energy. He’s playing really physical this year,” Smart said.
As the Bulldogs approach their next game, the focus remains on their development and execution. “We’re worried about getting better,” Smart emphasized. “That’s who we’ll prepare for,” referring to the upcoming matchup against Charlotte.
“Our objective is to win every game that we play. You’ve got to look at the opportunity to play and win a conference championship,” Smart concluded.
