Kirk Cousins Set as Falcons Backup for 2025 NFL Season

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Kirk Cousins is expected to start the 2025 NFL season as the backup quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons. The 36-year-old veteran’s future has been uncertain since he was benched in favor of rookie Michael Penix Jr. last season.
Cousins arrived for the team’s voluntary offseason workout program last month, where Falcons assistant general manager Kyle Smith expressed confidence in him. “We love Kirk,” Smith said. “We love that he’s here.” Cousins had signed a $100 million guaranteed contract last year but encountered challenges during the 2024 season, losing his starting position towards the end.
In March, the Falcons retained Cousins by picking up a $10 million roster bonus, indicating they have plans for him moving forward. Although Cousins has been vocal about wishing to remain a starter, reports suggest he will be the ‘first call’ if any teams face quarterback injuries.
During his time with the Falcons, Cousins contributed to a solid start in the 2024 season, helping the team to a 6-3 record. However, a midseason slump led to his benching.
Offensive coordinator Zac Robinson noted that Cousins will be a valuable asset for the team, even in a backup role. “He’s a valuable player to this offense, to this team. And he’s here. We’re going to coach him just like we do every other player on the team,” Robinson said.
As the offseason progresses, the Falcons are monitoring other teams’ quarterback situations, and Cousins could still be traded if the opportunity arises. Until then, he remains a crucial part of Atlanta’s plans, especially as they focus on improving their pass rush from a disappointing 2024 season.
The Falcons will face an important challenge with their schedule, which will include all NFC South teams as well as several matchups from the AFC East and NFC West. The complete schedule will be released on May 14.
The upcoming season promises to be a pivotal one for both Cousins and the Falcons as they aim to improve upon last year’s performance.
