Kirk Herbstreit And Peter At Orange Bowl

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit has found a new furry companion to join him on the road after the passing of his beloved golden retriever, Ben. Herbstreit introduced Peter, Ben’s younger brother, during the Orange Bowl showdown between Penn State and Notre Dame on Thursday.

Ben, who became a fixture in college football circles as Herbstreit’s emotional support animal, passed away in November after battling leukemia. The dog’s presence at games and on ESPN’s College GameDay set had endeared him to fans and colleagues alike. Herbstreit openly grieved Ben’s loss, sharing his heartbreak on social media, where the post garnered nearly 21 million views.

Peter, another golden retriever, has quickly stepped into his brother’s paw prints. Herbstreit has been traveling with Peter to major games, including the SEC Championship, the College Football Playoff semifinals, and the Rose Bowl. Peter’s Rose Bowl credential even listed him as “Director of Snuggles.”

“Ben and Peter were such a heartwarming highlight of college football season,” said Sarah Klopfer, OU athletics’ managing director of creative strategy. The University of Oklahoma‘s athletic department welcomed Peter with a framed illustration honoring Ben and a basket of goodies during the Sooners’ game against Alabama.

Herbstreit’s bond with his dogs has resonated deeply within the college football community. “Kirk and Ben were at our LSU home game this year, and Ben received a chain with his credentials as well as a few treats,” said Alan Cannon, Texas A&M executive associate athletic director of external operations. Ben even had a meet-and-greet with Texas A&M’s mascot, Reveille X.

Peter’s next stop is the Cotton Bowl, where organizers are preparing a special experience for him. “We are going to make sure Peter is going to have a Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic experience that’s like no other,” said Scottie Rodgers, Cotton Bowl vice president of communications.

Herbstreit’s decision to bring his dogs to games has been embraced by fans and institutions alike, offering a heartwarming reminder of the humanity and compassion that transcends the sport. As Peter continues to accompany Herbstreit, the college football world eagerly welcomes its newest four-legged star.
