Klay Kubiak Promoted to 49ers Offensive Coordinator for 2025 Season
Klay Kubiak has been promoted to offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced Wednesday. Kubiak, who previously served as the team’s offensive passing game specialist in 2024 and assistant quarterbacks coach for two seasons, will take on the role as the 49ers prepare for significant coaching changes in 2025.
Shanahan confirmed that Kubiak will not call offensive plays during the upcoming season, a responsibility Shanahan will retain. This marks only the second time in Shanahan’s tenure with the 49ers that he has appointed an offensive coordinator. The first was Mike McDaniel, who held the title in 2021 before becoming head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
The 49ers are undergoing a coaching overhaul, with special teams coordinator Brian Schneider fired and defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen not returning. Kubiak’s promotion comes as the team seeks to address offensive struggles, particularly in the red zone, where the 49ers ranked outside the top five in scoring efficiency during the 2024 season.
“Klay has been an integral part of our offensive staff, and this promotion reflects his contributions and potential,” Shanahan said during a press conference. “While I’ll continue to call plays, Klay will take on additional responsibilities to help us improve in key areas.”
Kubiak’s elevation could position him for future head coaching opportunities if the 49ers’ offense performs well in 2025. Tight end George Kittle praised the move, noting Kubiak’s deep understanding of the team’s offensive system. “Klay knows what we’re trying to do, and he’s got the experience to help us take the next step,” Kittle said.
The 49ers finished the 2024 season ranked among the top teams in total offense but struggled to convert opportunities into points. Kubiak’s new role will focus on refining the team’s red zone efficiency and supporting Shanahan in game planning and strategy.
