Klay Thompson’s Future Uncertain After Mavericks’ Rough Start
Dallas, Texas — Klay Thompson found himself back on the bench Wednesday for the first time since joining the Dallas Mavericks. Despite this setback, many believe he has few regrets about leaving the Golden State Warriors last year.
However, his current situation may change as the Mavericks struggle with a 2-6 start this season. According to Brett Siegel of Clutch Points, the team’s woes might push them to explore trades involving Thompson.
Thompson is in the second year of a three-year, $50 million contract, earning $16.7 million this season. This sizable contract could be a point of concern as the Mavericks look to address their early season issues.
“It is no secret that Nico Harrison and the Mavericks’ front office will explore what return exists for Klay Thompson before the trade deadline,” Siegel noted. However, with Thompson averaging a career-low 8.5 points and shooting just 34.2% from the floor, finding interested teams might be difficult.
The possibility of Thompson hitting the trade market could lead him to reconsider his decision to leave the Warriors, where he was a franchise legend. Golden State’s front office had been willing to let him walk in free agency, but would they ever have traded him?
Former teammate Draymond Green’s position suggests the Warriors likely would have preferred to keep Thompson. Green, now viewed as a pillar of the organization, has been the subject of trade talks on multiple occasions but has remained a vital part of the franchise.
Thompson took a risk joining the Mavericks in hopes of new opportunities, but with uncertainty hanging over his future, he may find himself longing for the stability he once had in Golden State.
