Klay Thompson Honors Doctor with Warriors Championship Ring

DALLAS, Feb. 26, 2025 — Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson presented a heartfelt gift to the man who helped revive his career, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Richard Ferkel, following the Mavericks’ 107-99 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Thompson, who was sidelined for two full seasons due to significant injuries, honored Ferkel by gifting him a championship ring from the Golden State Warriors‘ 2022 title.
“Without you, I would not have been the second leading scorer on a championship team,” Thompson said, reflecting on the pivotal role Ferkel played in his recovery after a torn Achilles in 2020. “I can’t thank you enough … I didn’t even think that was possible.”
Thompson, a key player in the Warriors’ dynasty, faced two major injuries, beginning with a torn ACL suffered in the 2019 NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors. After a lengthy rehabilitation, he was poised to return for the 2020-21 season, only to suffer a torn Achilles during a pick-up game. This second injury resulted in another season on the sidelines, pushing Thompson’s return to January 2022.
Once back on the court, Thompson quickly regained his form, averaging 20.4 points per game during the regular season and contributing to the Warriors’ fourth championship in eight years. His successful comeback was made possible by Ferkel’s surgical expertise.
“Oh my gosh, this is unbelievable,” Ferkel exclaimed during the ring presentation, as captured in a video by The Athletic’s Sam Amick. His medical contributions extend beyond Thompson; he also performed significant surgeries on other players, including Warriors star Stephen Curry, whose ankle repair in 2012 set the foundation for his legendary career.
Thompson, who has spent all but one season of his career with the Warriors, joined the Mavericks in the recent season, now averaging 13.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game.
