Klay Thompson Struggles as Mavericks Defeat Raptors in Hard-Fought Game
Dallas, TX — The Dallas Mavericks secured their first win of the season by defeating the Toronto Raptors 108-98 on Sunday night. However, it was another challenging game for Klay Thompson, who played just 20 minutes at the American Airlines Center.
Thompson, a five-time All-Star, has been averaging a career-low 19.9 minutes per game this season, raising questions about his future with the Mavericks. Critics suggest he and the team should part ways, noting this is not what Thompson envisioned when he signed a three-year, $50 million contract with Dallas after leaving the Golden State Warriors.
“It may be best for both sides to move on because Thompson can’t generate open shots for himself with the way this offense is structured,” wrote analyst Veazey. He added that defenses can target Thompson due to the lack of spacing and offensive threats around him.
Despite starting all three games so far, Thompson’s reduced playing time is concerning. Rookie point guard Cooper Flagg leads the team with over 31 minutes per game, while teammates Max Christie and Naji Marshall also surpass Thompson’s minutes.
Even former Warrior D'Angelo Russell logged 29 minutes off the bench during Sunday’s game, highlighting Thompson’s struggle to find playing time. Currently, he averages just 9.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and shoots 37% from the field and 26.7% from three-point range, despite hitting two of four attempts from deep against Toronto.
There is speculation that another team could make better use of Thompson’s talents, but it remains unclear if the Mavericks will keep him until Kyrie Irving returns from injury or explore trading him sooner.
Reuniting with the Warriors seems unlikely on Thompson’s current contract, though fans fondly remember his integral role in Golden State’s success.
The Warriors continue their strong start to the season with a 4-1 record, contrasting with the Mavericks’ disappointing 1-3 performance. Dallas fans, while aware of Thompson’s declining prowess, hope for improvement as the season progresses.
