Ashburn, VA – Ahead of their upcoming home game against the Carolina Panthers, Washington Commanders‘ offensive coordinator, Kliff Kingsbury, addressed local media, offering insights into the team’s strategies and player performances.

Kingsbury commented on quarterback Jayden Daniels‘ progress, stating, “All his work is starting to pay off in the fact that the game’s starting to slow down more and more each week.”

Regarding running back Brian Robinson, Kingsbury noted, “He’s a big part of what we do both emotionally and physically. Getting him back would be a big lift.”

On a trick play involving running back Austin Ekeler, Kingsbury mentioned, “That’s a Jeff Brohm play; he did it at Purdue, and obviously, we have David Blough, who played for Jeff Brohm, so [he] brought that one up. They threw it to a tight end; we ended up sneaking Austin back there.”

Daniels’ effectiveness against blitzing defenses was attributed to his dedication. “The hours he puts in studying the tape, understanding the protections, and he understands the pressures of the week – it’s kind of a combination of all three of those,” Kingsbury explained.

When asked about the league-wide use of at-snap motion, Kingsbury acknowledged its challenges for defenses: “I know it’s a challenge for defenses. I’m sure it’ll transition to something else in a few months.”

Running back Jeremy McNichols earned praise from Kingsbury, who said, “He’s been great. I was impressed with him throughout training camp. Always knew his assignment; practices hard; plays hard.”

Reflecting on the Commanders’ performance against the Baltimore Ravens, Kingsbury admitted, “We needed to run it better to win that game and possess the ball more than we did. We had our defense out there a lot because we weren’t able to establish the run game.”

Looking ahead to facing the Panthers, Kingsbury noted the importance of a balanced offensive approach: “We just want to get back to how we were playing, and that is a more balanced approach.”

On wide receiver Terry McLaurin, Kingsbury commended his work ethic: “Terry’s a guy who every day puts in the work, and if the ball’s not coming to him, he doesn’t say a word; he continues to work – without the ball, with the ball, practicing hard. He’s a real tone-setter for the entire team.”

Discussing the no-huddle offense, Kingsbury related its success to Daniels: “It starts with Jayden; he played that kind of tempo in college and believes in it. That really set the tone for the entire group.”

Finally, Kingsbury addressed the rotation of Cornelius Lucas and Brandon Coleman at left tackle: “We like what we’ve seen from both guys; I think that’s the best answer I can give. It’s unique, I get that. I’ve never done it to this extent, but ‘if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.’”

In a broader discussion about the NFL, Kingsbury noted the increased use of motion plays. According to reports, the Commanders have used some form of motion on 44% of their dropbacks this season, a strategy that Kingsbury acknowledges may soon evolve as part of the game’s cyclical nature.

Washington continues to adapt to current NFL trends, which have already resulted in higher offensive production.
