Knicks Practice Mitchell Robinson Injury Update

New York, New York — Mitchell Robinson returned to full practice for the New York Knicks on Wednesday, marking the first time since last year’s playoffs that he participated in 5-on-5 scrimmaging. Robinson’s recovery from ankle surgery this May is progressing, and he is expected to make his season debut shortly after the upcoming All-Star break.

However, the Knicks are facing challenges as Josh Hart has been ruled out of Thursday’s home game against the Chicago Bulls due to a right-knee injury. Hart, who has been a workhorse for the Knicks, ranks third in the NBA in minutes per game this season at 37.8. He was previously listed as questionable due to what the team described as knee soreness, which has been diagnosed as patellofemoral syndrome, commonly known as runner’s knee.

“It’s significant for our team’s rotation,” said Coach Tom Thibodeau. “Whenever you have a player like Hart out, it will change how we function. But we have to adjust and keep moving forward.”

Robinson, standing at 7-foot tall, is anticipated to add depth to the Knicks, particularly in defensive situations and as an offensive rebounder. Thibodeau remarked on Robinson’s performance during practice, stating, “He looks good. He’s gotta get his timing back, but overall, he moved pretty well. It will take some time.”

Robinson has been pivotal in maintaining the Knicks’ defensive structure, which ranks 18th in the league. Thibodeau noted, “The things that he can bring — the hustle, the ability to see things early, play pick and roll, rim-protect, offensive rebound — are valuable,” emphasizing the impact Robinson will have once he returns fully.

In addition, OG Anunoby, who missed the last five games prior to the break due to a sprained right foot, has been designated as questionable for Thursday’s game. “He’s benefitted from this week-long break,” said Thibodeau. “Hopefully, he’ll be back soon.”

The Knicks have a challenging road ahead, playing the Cavaliers and Celtics on consecutive nights following the Bulls game. Currently, New York holds a 36-18 record, positioning them third in the Eastern Conference, trailing only Cleveland and Boston.

“We’re excited about the stretch run ahead,” said All-Star guard Jalen Brunson. “We love this team and have one goal in mind — to advance deeper in the postseason.”

As they approach the final third of the regular season, the Knicks look to seize the opportunity with both Robinson and Anunoby returning to the lineup. With the playoff picture in sight, every moment of practice and preparation counts.

“We had guys out, so it allowed new guys to step in and gain valuable experience,” Thibodeau added. “Now having more depth is crucial for us.”
