New York Knicks Coaching Search

New York, NY — The New York Knicks faced setbacks in their head coaching search on Wednesday as multiple teams denied their requests to interview top candidates. The Knicks sought to speak with Atlanta Hawks head coach Quin Snyder, but the request was “firmly denied.” This follows a series of similar refusals for other prominent coaches.

As reported by ESPN, the Knicks also approached the Chicago Bulls to interview head coach Billy Donovan, only to be turned away. The Bulls value Donovan for his coaching skills and ability to connect with players. The Knicks are looking for a seasoned coach to replace Tom Thibodeau, who was fired after leading the team to its first Eastern Conference Finals since 2000.

The Knicks previously sought permission to interview Chris Finch of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Ime Udoka of the Houston Rockets, but both requests were also denied. Additionally, the Mavericks refused a request to interview Jason Kidd, who is regarded as a favorite within the Knicks organization.

Kidd, who has the potential to leverage the Knicks’ interest into a contract extension with Dallas, has two years left on his current deal. With prospects of hiring established coaches like Kidd, Udoka, and Finch looking slim, the Knicks may have to consider hiring an unemployed coach or an assistant.

Among potential candidates is former Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone, who won a championship two years ago and previously worked as an assistant with the Knicks from 2001 to 2005. Another option could be veteran coach Mike Brown, who was recently fired by the Sacramento Kings.

The Knicks finished the 2024-25 season with 51 wins, their highest in over a decade, but fell short in the playoffs, leading to their urgent need for a new head coach. As they continue their search, it remains to be seen who will emerge as their top choice amid the ongoing denials.
