Ime Udoka Coaching Rockets

HOUSTON, Texas — The New York Knicks are reportedly interested in Ime Udoka as a potential head coach, following their decision to part ways with their previous coach. Multiple media outlets, including SNY and Marc Stein, have identified Udoka as a candidate, alongside Jason Kidd.

Udoka, who took over the Houston Rockets in April 2023, has been making significant strides with the team during his tenure. The Rockets have shown improvement, raising his profile as a leading candidate for other positions like the one in New York.

To hire Udoka, the Knicks would need to obtain permission from the Rockets and offer compensation, as he is under contract for multiple seasons. “There’s no reason to think the Rockets would consider such an arrangement,” said Ian Begley, a respected Knicks reporter.

While interest from the Knicks has emerged, there is currently no indication that Udoka has expressed a desire to leave Houston. The Rockets view him as a foundational part of their future. Moreover, he remains committed to the team, suggesting little inclination to campaign for the Knicks’ job.

Udoka is a native of Portland, making Houston closer to his roots than New York. However, his growing reputation could be beneficial in discussions about a contract extension, especially as NBA coaching salaries have risen significantly in recent years.

As the landscape of NBA coaching continues to evolve, the interest from the Knicks may serve to strengthen Udoka’s negotiating position with the Rockets as they approach future discussions about his contract.
