Kopech Moves to Dodgers in Major Trade Deal

In a big shakeup just ahead of the trade deadline, MLB pitcher Michael Kopech is saying goodbye to the Chicago White Sox and hello to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Kopech reflected fondly on his debut and the support he received from fans during his time with the Sox.

Kopech made his debut on August 21, 2018, against the Minnesota Twins and admitted it felt like a scene straight out of a movie with the packed stands cheering him on. “I’ll never forget how many fans were here in support,” he shared, expressing his gratitude for the backing he received throughout his ups and downs.

The trade was part of a complex three-team deal that not only sent Kopech to the Dodgers but also involved the St. Louis Cardinals. As part of the deal, the Sox traded pitcher Erick Fedde and outfielder Tommy Pham. In return, the Sox received infielder/outfielder Miguel Vargas and a couple of promising infield prospects.

Vargas comes to the Sox with a decent track record, having played 30 games and hitting a respectable .239 this season. Sox general manager Chris Getz is hopeful that Vargas, just 24 years old, can boost a struggling offense. “He’s one of the younger, brighter bats in our game,” he said.

Kopech, now 28, arrived in Chicago as part of the big trade that sent star pitcher Chris Sale to the Boston Red Sox back in 2016. His journey has been a roller coaster ride, including Tommy John surgery and a few years grappling with injuries and role changes. He leaves the Sox with a record of 2-8 this season and a mixed bag of emotions.

Fedde, who is on a roll after an impressive season in Korea, is excited to join the Cardinals. He mentioned that he’s sad to leave his Sox teammates but is looking forward to new opportunities in St. Louis.

Pham, who had a good run with the Sox this year, is also moving on from Chicago. After signing a minor-league deal earlier this season, he made a significant impact but understood that trading him was a strategic move for the future.

The trade was strategic for the Sox, as Getz mentioned that they are looking to boost their offense with new talent. Prospects like Jeral Perez and Alexander Albertus, who are regarded as future stars, have also been included in the deal, positioning the Sox to rebuild for the coming years.
