Kurt Warner Weighs In on Drake Maye’s Performance This Season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner has shared his thoughts on New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye‘s performance this season. Warner acknowledged that while Maye has displayed moments of brilliance, he isn’t ready to place him among the league’s elite quarterbacks just yet.
“I think Drake is playing some good football,” Warner said. “But right now, a little of it is a little more backyard football than solid, consistent quarterback play.” He referenced last week’s game against the Buffalo Bills, where Maye executed big plays, but noted they often stemmed from improvisation rather than traditional quarterbacking skills.
One highlight was a 32-yard completion to Stefon Diggs in the third quarter, a play Warner labeled as “big-time,” but also illustrative of Maye relying too heavily on improvisation. Warner stressed the need for Maye to “consistently live in the pocket” to become a great quarterback.
Despite his reservations, Warner admitted that Maye’s statistics speak for themselves. Maye ranks fifth in passing yards (1,261), with a passer rating of 107.8, and he holds the second-highest completion percentage at 73.9%. Pro Football Focus also ranks him among the top ten quarterbacks for the season.
Warner emphasized that while Maye has been effective, it remains crucial to analyze a larger body of work before making definitive statements about his future. “I wanna see more of Drake,” Warner stated. “He’s played well this year. I just wanna see some more consistency before I crown him.”
The season is still ongoing, and many will be watching closely to see if Maye can build on his impressive performances and secure a place among the league’s top quarterbacks.
